VENOUS DUPLEX SCAN OF THE LOWER EXTREMITIES printer-friendly PDF version

What is it?
The Lower Extremity Venous Doppler study is a simple test to examine the blood circulation in the legs.

What do I do?
No special preparation is needed.

What will happen?
You will remove your shoes, socks and slacks and lie on your back with your head slightly elevated. The technologist places gel on your skin and glides a “knob or paddle” called a probe, down each leg in turn. The technologist may also have you stand and then scan the legs a second time. You should not feel any discomfort from the exam.

How long does it take?
The test takes one hour.
